St. Mary’s Horse Refuge is holding an Open Day on Sunday, 10th August, and everyone is welcome! It’s a great opportunity to visit the refuge, meet our lovely rescue horses, and enjoy a relaxed day out. There’ll be a fantastic display of vintage tractors, classic cars, and stationary engines, along with a variety of local stalls and a dedicated tack stall. Whether you're interested in the machinery, looking for something unique from local sellers, or just want to spend time with the horses, there’s something for everyone. All proceeds from the day go directly towards the care of our horses, so your support really makes a difference.

We’d love to see you there!

We've had a busy month at the refuge! Our AGM meeting with the trustees focused on brainstorming ways to raise extra funds, as coming out of the winter months is always challenging. We have been discussing our upcoming summer open day, where you can meet the horses and browse our stalls. We'll be sharing the date with you all soon.

We've also been hard at work fixing the roof of the ponies' stables, which has been quite a task. The horses and ponies received a visit from the farrier, and we're thrilled to report that Toby is doing much better and gaining weight.

Please remember, you can support us by sponsoring one of our horses, purchasing items from our wishlist, or making a donation of any size. We truly appreciate all the help we receive and couldn't continue without your generosity.

April 2025

With the mix of sun and rain, we are all on ragwort watch as this plant can be poisonous to our horses. Despite this, we are enjoying the arrival of the sun and are glad to have made it through the wet winter months. The horses are all doing well. Our old boy Toby lost some weight over the winter, so we are being extra vigilant with him, increasing his feeds throughout the day, and ensuring he stays warm at night. Additionally, the spring grass can be problematic for laminitis, so the ponies are on restricted grazing.

Thank you for your continued support! Did you know you can sponsor our horses or ponies, donate, or purchase something from our Amazon wishlist from the links above?

March 2025

This month, our horses have had their regular visit from the farrier, and with the arrival of some sunshine, we've been busy adjusting their rugs to keep them comfortable with the changing weather. Our beloved Toby, who is 37 years old, needs extra care as he feels the cold more than the others and sometimes wears up to four rugs. The other horses and ponies have enjoyed the freedom of having their rugs off, rolling in the mud, and bursting with energy as they run around the field together.

We kindly ask you to consider sponsoring one of our horses or ponies or making a small donation. Your support is invaluable to us, and we couldn't do what we do without it.
